Lots of companies in NYC have something called “summer Fridays”, which means that Fridays are only half-days so that their employees can enjoy the great weather and the amazing events the city holds over the summer. Banks and accounting firms don’t make the cut but many of the media companies do. As Gawker points out, apparently that’s not the case at News Corp.

Well, I reckon some figure since “summer Fridays” aren’t actually legal holidays or the like that they’re going to keep working their employees. However, I can totally see why media companies would be prone to giving “summer Fridays” to people. It’s probably a marvelous way to find stories that would otherwise fly under the radar. So giving them probably is a mix of altruism and business savvy.
That’s my quick thoughts on it.
good point on the altruism/business savvy. i think the issue is that summer fridays are an accepted standard (in nyc) and murdoch is overworking his empire. then again, as the wsj suggests, maybe employees wouldn’t take advantage of it anyway due to the economic conditions – http://blogs.wsj.com/juggle/2010/07/09/do-summer-fridays-still-exist/

Well, pretty blunt there ha.

I love the idea of summer fridays. Wish BBC gave us half days on fridays. x
Summer Fridays are a fab idea, I hope they would catch on here in the UK!!!
So what’s with the blue up-arrow on the word ‘seasons’ I wonder.
Correcting a typo made by his secretary. It is an apostrophe.
That’s too bad that Mr. Murdoch doesn’t see fit to allow his employees the chance to enjoy the beautiful summer weather. From what I understand, Americans have the least amount of ‘days off’ in comparison to the other developed countries. I’m pretty sure that the French, the Dutch, the Swedes, and the Norwegians are near the top when it comes time to giving days off to their employees.

Good idea.I like it.Thank for share.
As long as consumers don’t demand extreme effort from workers on Summer Fridays, I don’t think it’s a bad idea. But if you are like a sunscreen production company…watch out. Haha…

:)
this is AMAZING! I so wish I had summer Fridays. It makes sense though. A lot of people aren’t even focused because they’re ready to jet out.
I am always amazed by the lack of US holiday time compared to other countries. Soon as the recession lifts all the decent employees will be off to work elsewhere. Happy workers are more productive, to be materialistic about it, anyway. Once an a**hole, always an a**hole.
Congrats on being Freshly Pressed.
thank you! and thanks for visiting and commenting :)
Leisure time to find stories ? Most of the media couldn’t find a story perched on their upper lip. That may be why so many are circling the financial bowl, because what used to be actual work is now viewed as a sort of modified playtime. Hunting sources, verifying information and finding prime, first hand material is a lot of work and requires development to make it cohesive. The chain of second hand junk, rumors and innuendo that has been on most of the broadcast media is reflected in their work, and apparently, now in their attitude towards an explicit 10 % of their work week. I would guess that it is probably much higher. Murdoch at least seems to try to get it right, even though the show scenario is not very pretty. And if the price is a non-play attitude, then we should look at the product with critical eyes, not the playpen with longing hearts.
Ahhhhhh! Rupert! Dontcha just love him?? I wouldn’t put too much credence to his news-gathering sources – he likes his ‘primary source’ news well salted before it gets to his plate.
Love him, Rupert that is ? No, but then who likes looking into the societal mirror and seeing the wages of our hedonism tear down what is good about that society. That’s what media is, a mirror. And no matter of what you think of the “content” therein, you should always be able to look first at the surface of that mirror and determine if it is level, straight, untainted and as undistorted as humanly possible. Twist it any way you want to after that.
LOL! Love it!
Summer Fridays should be mandatory in North America! Summer is too short.

funny!
summer friday,,good idea.. :)
what a great post..
way to go..
thumbs up..
Murdoch doesn’t beat around the bush, does he? :) I think half-day fridays are great. Then again, since i’m from a tropical country where a good part of the year is summer, i don’t see it happening here.
I love Summer Fridays.
Good idea.I like it.
Once you think about it, “concentration is imperative where the form of the territory being dealt with dictates the parameters of the response that are made under such constraints that have already been laid down.” But to do so on Friday afternoons in a New York heat wave is beyond the pail…while if you tend to agree with me on this point (that is, if you want to learn something really useful today) then why not follow this hyperlink: http://www.therulesofacquisition.wordpress.com/ as it may take you somewhere that you always wanted to go, but didn’t previously know that you always wanted to get there. As, after all, any anomaly found lying on the path to the future offers the opportunity to create something better by adapting to what caused it, even on sunny days without a hint of rain in the sky…
I travel in Friday Summer. It’s good time.
wow, maybe I should get a job for the summer in NY! In San Francisco, it’s foggy and cold in the summer… boo!
Well, around here we have a lot of free days, half fridays would be the top cherry on the whole cake. People would stop working,
Great idea….shame Mr Murdoch doesn’t think so :-(
There is a reason nobody likes Murdoch, Summer Fridays sound like a great motivator though…

YIKES
Yikes! I am unemployed, so every day is a “summer Friday” to me. But it is too hot to get out and do anything. Sorry for the double comment, my cat got on the keyboard.
